Lu Weibing: Camera under the screen? It's still too early

In recent years, all the major smartphone manufacturers in the world have mainly focused on finding a technology that allows you to have a truly "full screen" design without compromise. The technologies adopted to date range from the notch that for the first time allowed the "removal" of the upper edge, followed by the pop-up mechanism of the front camera, we then saw the output of devices with holes on the screen and finally , what seems to be the way to the future: the camera under the screen.

Lu Weibing: Camera under the screen? It's still too early

We say "it seems" because the general manager of Redmi and president of Xiaomi, Lu Weibing, is no longer sure of this choice. In a post on the Chinese social network Weibo, Weibing said that: “Many have doubts about the real application of the CUP (Camera Under Panel, ie camera under the screen) technology on smartphones. To reach a real full screen without sacrificing space, but there are several factors that make this implementation difficult ".

Lu Weibing then explained the reasons that make the application difficult: “Simply put, there is a 'contradiction' between PPI (pixel per inch ratio) and transmittance. Currently, smartphone displays have a PPI of around 400, with such a high PPI, the transmission of light passing through the screen to get to the camera sensor has deteriorated greatly. This means that less light arrives to the sensor, so we will have worse quality photos. "

Weibing went on to say that: “If the PPI ratio is decreased and the transmittance increases, there will be a large difference between the screen above the camera and the remaining one, this causes a" patch "effect with that display portion showing different colors. So, with the technologies currently available, it is impossible to find a solution that increases the transmittance and consequently the quality of the photos, and at the same time it is not bad to see ”.

The general manager of Redmi ended by saying that: "Although Xiaomi announced the CUP technology called DEMON in 2019, this is still far from going into mass production. The whole industry is working hard to find a better solution in the future. "

In conclusion, even if in 2019 Xiaomi had anticipated the technology, it seems that this is still far from entering the market. But Xiaomi isn't the only brand to have had problems with it, too Oppo has announced that their next flagship will not have this long-awaited technology. We just have to wait for one of the many brands, mainly Chinese, to find an alternative solution.
