Let's talk again about Rai license fee and the charge of the same on the electricity bill. As we know, for several years we have been paying a fee within the electricity bill that corresponds precisely to this fee for the Italian radio service. Already in November we talked about the possibility of cancellation of the Rai license fee and today, with great surprise, we understand that that proposal becomes more and more concrete. As reported by the major Italian newspapers, from 2023 we will have to say goodbye to the installment in the electricity bill of the Rai license. This payment method came into force in 2016 at the hands of the Renzi government and up to now there has been no way not to pay it. On April 13th, Maria Laura Paxia of the mixed group ha presented the agenda for the elimination of the aforementioned fee. This agenda was accepted by the Government without the need for a new vote.
But this, at least for now, it does not outline the official nature of the decision. In fact, as we know, the agenda has a political value, but it is not binding on the Government. Basically we could see a change of course in the coming months. But why should you change your mind? The cancellation would represent too great a risk for the keeping of the accounts of the public TV that already leads from 2020 accounts in red of several hundred million euros.
In any case, if the order is approved, the Government should find another alternative way to replenish the coffers without the income from the Rai license fee. So a new possibility emerges: the Rai license fee will indeed be removed from the bill, but it will be paid in another way. A red herring? Maybe yes, but in any case it is a public service and it is right that it be paid.
But why did all this diatribe arise? The decision has been made because i Energy suppliers can only "ask" for charges related to the electricity supply. Since the RAI fee is a property tax (even if this is not exactly the case), this cannot be assimilated into the above charges.
Recall that after i Checks of the Guardia di Finanza, all citizens who, since 2016 (the year in which the RAI fee was included in the bill), have not paid the fee, may incur high fines. Specifically, those who evade risk:
- to pay up to 6 times the amount of the tax: this means up to € 540 not to mention the arrears (if any) and interest
- complaint: if you do not pay, you can assume that you have an exemption without entitlement. In this case the complaint is for false ideological and provides for the imprisonment up to 2 years
