RAI license fee will change price from 2024: here are all the news

The recent press conference held at Palazzo Chigi highlighted some news regarding the canon RAI, stimulating hopes but also doubts among citizens. We've been talking about it a lot: it had to be before disappear from the bill of the electric current, then return to a other price. Today we have official news even if they are not all exactly positive. This explains all the things said by the minister Giorgetti e Salvini.

Announcement of the reduction of the RAI license fee

During the press conference for the presentation of the maneuver 2024, the vice-president of the Council, Matteo Salvini, announced that the Rai license fee will undergo a reduction, going from €90 to €70 per year. This cut represents a 22% decrease compared to the current amount, lightening the bill of Italian taxpayers. However, the method of payment of this tax appears set to undergo further changes.

Doubts about the minister's words

The Minister of Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti, added significant details, declaring that "a quarter of the license fee is no longer paid in the bill". This statement raises important questions: how this RAI license fee will be collected if not through the electricity bill?

Giorgetti's statement seems to suggest a possible change in the method of collecting the license fee. Or, a more plausible hypothesis, he meant that the 22% was actually a quarter of the original price of the RAI license fee. In fact we are at 22% and he may have rounded to simplify (or to advertise well)

The hypothesis of the microtax on mobile devices

In the past, Giorgetti he had mentioned to the possibility of extend the payment of the RAI license fee to owners of smartphones, PCs and tablets, underlining how the new multimedia platforms allow access to Rai services through these devices. If this proposal were to go ahead, the tax basis could shift from owning a television to owning a mobile phone account.

This would result in a significant revision of the per capita cost of the license fee, given that at the moment the RAI license fee is paid by approximately 21 million people, while there are approximately 107 million active telephone users.

A reduction in the rent to 70 euros would imply a revenue loss of approximately €420 million for RAI. While this reduction has been welcomed by some sectors, others are expressing concerns about possible new payment methods. Maximilian Dona, president ofUnione Nazionale Consumatori, Has All espresso brewing methods the hope that the reduction will not be compensated by an extension of the fee to new devices.
