Google and Qualcomm will allow 4 Android updates, not 3 anymore

Through Project Treble Google has allowed speed up software updates on smartphones with Android platform. However, while this has helped telephony companies to deliver update packages faster, it has made the life of Qualcomm a hell. In pennies terms Treble has increased complexity, and therefore the engineering costs associated with providing support for updating the Android operating system for a given chipset. All this resulted in a much shorter duration of support from the company. Apparently though this will never happen again.

Thanks Google: top-of-the-range smartphones with Snapdragon SoC, updated to Android 11, will receive 4 software updates in the future

For those who don't chew on these terms, let's try to summarize. In general, the best smartphones of each brand support the maximum 3 system updates e 3 security. These are obviously referring to large caliber updates, and not applications. For example, those who came out of the factory with Android 9 will end their life with Android 11. That happens though only with top of the range devices, those entry level have an even shorter life. As for the flagships, history will change thanks to partnership between Google and Qualcomm. Let's go see the details.

Google and Qualcomm will allow 4 Android updates, not 3 anymore

Secondo as reported, all devices with Snapdragon SoCs launched with Android 11 or later, starting with the Snapdragon 888, will support 3 updates of the Android operating system and 4 years of security updates (monthly security patches). But how is this possible? Put simply the framework operating system, for example, of Android 11 will be backwards compatible with the vendor's implementation designed for Android 10.

WARNING

There is talk of 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates!

A truly unexpected step forward. In fact, many complain about the short life of their devices, which may have cost an arm and a leg. For example my old man Xiaomi Mi 8 was abandoned after two and a half years due to the stop of official support. If it was out now, I potentially could have kept the same device longer than it would have been promised more upgrade packages, both at the operating system level and at the security patch level.
