Google is removing the Movies and TV section from the Play Store

We use Play Store as a hub to purchase various items from the platform of the same name. This includes movies and TV shows. However, Google will change how we will buy or rent entertainment content and that may not suit most people well. The society will remove the Movies and TV section from the Play Store. However, do not worry: these two sections have not been completely eliminated, but rather relocated within the app Google TV.

Two pieces of the Play Store are gone: the Movies and TV section will now be integrated into Google TV. Blame the streaming? In our opinion, yes

According to Google itself, the Film and TV section is disappearing from the Play Store. So where will we manage the purchase of our films and shows? From Google TV. There is no doubt that the company has pushed this TV service aggressively since its launch. And in fact it could not be otherwise being the spiritual successor of the Film service. But now, why this happened? In our opinion, due to the high quantity (and quality) of streaming services that made movie rentals superfluous. At least for many of the users.

From today, when we want to buy or rent a movie or a program, we will have to to do it on the app Google TV dedicated. That shouldn't be a big deal, as most Android smartphones come with the app pre-installed. The change has been underway for a few days: even now, if we go to the Movies and TV section of the Play Store, we will be go directly to the Google TV app. In any case these are the things to keep in mind starting with June 2022, time of complete integration of the service:

  • purchased content will continue to be available in the Google TV app
  • purchases on the new app continue to be eligible for family sharing and Google Play Points
  • we can still use Play credit and Play gift cards to purchase in the app
  • you can access the wish list from the app
  • we can still view and request refunds for purchases on
  • wish list and reviews can be downloaded from takeout.google.com

And for purchases already made? Do not worry, everything has already been transferred automatically and indeed, we will see the products already purchased on the Film and TV services also added those purchased on YouTube.
