MediaTek Dimensity 9300 flop? Vivo X100 Pro has serious overheating problems

Il Vivo X100 Pro it is one of the most powerful Android smartphones on the market, thanks to its processor MediaTek Dimensity 9300, the first 4-nanometer chip with an 8-core CPU and a Mali-G710 GPU. However, according to some tests carried out by Sahil Karoul on Twitter, the device suffers from a serious overheating problem which compromises its performance.

MediaTek Dimensity 9300 flop? Vivo X100 Pro has serious overheating problems

The Dimensity 9300 was presented by MediaTek as the most powerful SoC for smartphones at the moment, surpassing competitors Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and A17 Pro. The chip has a maximum frequency of 3,25 GHz for the Cortex-X4 core, the fastest never made by ARM. Furthermore, the chip is manufactured using TSMC's N4P process, which should ensure high power efficiency.

However, the Dimensity 9300 also has a peculiarity that could be the cause of its overheating: its CPU consists of only high-performance cores, no low-power cores. This means that the chip has a higher power consumption than its rivals, which instead use a big.LITTLE configuration with cores of different power.

MediaTek Dimensity 9300

To test the thermal behavior of the Dimensity 9300, Sahil Karoul ran the CPU Throttling Test, an application that loads the CPU with up to 100 threads and measures performance. The result was surprising: after just two minutes, the chip began to reduce the frequency of one of the cores to 0,60 GHz, while the other cores dropped to 1,20 GHz and 1,50 GHz. The chip's performance dropped by 46 percent due to thermal throttling.

This test shows that the Vivo in hot and humid environments.

MediaTek should therefore review its strategy and it would have been better to opt for a CPU with low-power cores, which could balance power consumption and performance, avoiding overheating.
