How will the smartphone market during this terrible 2021? Never so good according to estimates by Strategy Analytics. Perhaps it was a little announced but in a certain sense it is paradoxical. If we consider that the pandemic has forced us into the house for several months, the fact that the mobile device consumption has increased and is symptomatic. But it is curious to note how that of phones, in particular, has risen to stellar levels. Let's see the data from the analytics company.
How is the smartphone market doing in 2021? Strategy Analytics says growth is exponential and will continue to do so… but there are underlying problems
Strategy Analytics predicts global smartphone revenue this year they will grow by 13% compared to the previous year. According to the study, this is the highest figure ever recorded by analysts in the past 6 years. Just think that, always globally, last year revenues fell by 5%. The impact of the pandemic was there but it did not reduce consumption, on the contrary. The smart working has enticed users to purchase new devices adapted to work needs. This has given a considerable boost to the market.
Among the factors that have contributed the most to growth, however, are the release of the new model of iPhone e the expansion of 5G globally. This last figure, however, should not be deceiving: it is a global average. Not all countries (such as Italy in fact) can still fully rely on this connectivity. Linda Sui, senior director at Strategy Analytics, says:
We expect global smartphone sales to grow 7% to 1.4 billion units, and the global average price of wholesale smartphones (ASPs) in 2021 will grow 6% to $ 294, resulting in smartphones with global revenue. wholesale will exceed $ 400 billion. We expect the ultra-premium segment (wholesale price of $ 600 and above) to perform particularly well thanks to the entry of the iPhone 12. This accounts for nearly half of total wholesale revenue this year.
But why did we say at the beginning that this is not a good sign? TSMC has predicted that the chip crisis it will end in 2022. If this is the trend, we can expect that the light at the end of the tunnel will not be seen until 2023 ... or it will get worse.
