Nokia sues Oppo for 5G patent infringement

When it comes to patents we enter a minefield: companies often have to say against each other. And this is the case, for example, of Nokia, which just in these hours has sued Oppo for patent infringement on 5G. Here are the details.

Nokia vs Oppo: how will it end?

In summary, in 2018 Nokia filed 5G patents related to mobile phone communication. From that moment, all companies that want to use them have to pay a fee for each smartphone produced with these technologies. In the past, Lenovo has already been sued and reached an agreement with the Finnish company in April 2021.

It seems that Oppo has not paid this tax, of which it is exempt in China but not in Europe. The Chinese company, according to the EPO (European Patent Office), should correspond to Nokia the figure of 3€ for each device produced with these patents. Which Oppo, according to Nokia, would never have done.

Considering how many smartphones Oppo produces, the figure in question must not be low at all. And it is therefore plausible that the leaders of the Chinese company can find an agreement with Nokia, just as happened in the case of Lenovo. We will see what happens in the next few days.
