YouTube tests a new layout: here's what changes

YouTube, the world's most popular video sharing platform, is testing a new desktop layout which will change the users experience of viewing videos. As reported from site Android Police, the novelty is only available to a limited number of users and could arrive together with a new app design for Android and iOS. Let's see the changes.

YouTube tests new desktop layout that shows more video suggestions. It was time for a re-design of Google's video platform!

The new YouTube layout reverses the current position of the video hints and content description, moving the description, title and comments to the right of the screen and content suggestions below. This way, the video suggestions are arranged as a cluster at the bottom of the player, which makes the screen look more cluttered and filled with information.

Furthermore, the redesign takes away the importance of the comments, which are now available in a small box below the video description next to the player, as well as making the Like, Dislike, Share, and Subscribe buttons smaller. However, there are still some inconsistencies and uncertainties about this new design, for example the gap between the description/comment section next to the video and the suggestions below it.

While YouTube's new layout appears to offer a more complete view of content, some users have expressed concerns about it general confusion that could create, with various types of thumbnails that draw the user's attention to the main content. It's also not clear what the redraw will look like in theater mode, where the video takes up the full width of the window.

However, it is currently unclear if this design will go official and completely replace the current design. YouTube hasn't made any official statement yet, but may reveal more details during Google I/O 2023, Google annual conference for developers, which will take place later this month.

In any case, YouTube is trying to offer an increasingly personalized experience to its users, through its algorithms which suggest content based on their interests and their viewing history. The new layout could be another step in this direction, giving users more options to explore and discover new content.
