Qualcomm and Trimble announced an agreement under which the technology of positioning GPS from Trimble will be available on high-end Android smartphones. It is understood that we are talking about smartphones with processors Snapdragon 888 o Snapdragon 8 Gen1, at least for now. We still await the release of the Snapdragon Gen 8 Plus 1 (or Gen 2) who will also participate in the project. But what will this collaboration actually consist of? Let's see it together.
The renewed collaboration between Qualcomm and Trimble will lead to an improvement in the accuracy of the GPS signal on the top of the Android range
According to the supplier, this will increase the accuracy of GPS geolocation by five times compared to current solutions, but only owners of devices based on the flagship Snapdragon processors will be able to take advantage of them. Location technology Trimble RTX GNSS will be available for smartphones based on Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 888 chips in the second quarter of this year. Provides high-quality, accurate navigation with lane-level guidance.
Trimble RTX technology applies real-time corrections to data obtained from satellites and / or mobile data, obtaining an accuracy of up to 2 centimeters in specific cases or, on smartphones, of about one meter.

Access to the GPS service will be provided to application and service developers to improve the user experience in terms of navigation. The partnership between Trimble and Qualcomm it will also extend to automotive OEMs and their parts suppliers. They will be able to use meter-accurate GPS positioning to develop adriving assistance and solutions for the autonomous driving. The list of services that will be the first to provide smartphone owners with enhanced functionality has not yet been announced.
We do not know how our smartphones equipped with these Qualcomm SoCs will update. The normal thing would be via a OTA update or as part of a Google Play system update.
