The European Union is betting on greener batteries, but let's be clear

The European Union did a significant step forward in battery management, with an eye to the environment and the future of the planet. The Battery Environmental Regulation, approved by Parliament European, focuses on environmental protection and aims to promote battery recycling and production of more sustainable lithium cells. But beware: the speech does not apply (for now) to smartphones.

The new environmental regulation on batteries aims for a more sustainable future through responsible manufacturing and recycling

Batteries are an essential part of our daily life. They are in everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. However, the production and disposal of batteries have a significant impact on the environment. The new regulation aims to reduce this impact through a series of measures. One of the key measures of the regulation is the introduction of more stringent requirements for the production of batteries. This includes using more sustainable materials and promoting more energy efficient production processes.

In addition, the regulation establishes specific targets for battery recycling. This includes introducing minimum levels of materials recovered from battery waste, such as lithium and cobalt. For example, for lithium, the goal is recover 50% by 2027 and 80% by 2031. Another important aspect of the regulation is the traceability of batteries. This is particularly relevant as China is one of the largest producers of batteries, and it is essential for manufacturers to ensure that batteries are manufactured to certain standards.

As for smartphones, the European Union is considering working on a future regulation that will focus on these devices. This means that there are currently no plans to make replaceable batteries in smartphones mandatory. The new environmental regulation on batteries from the European Union represents an important step towards a more sustainable future. Through the promotion of recycling and responsible manufacturing, we aim to reduce the environmental impact of batteries and promote a greener economy.
