Samsung beats TSMC? Development for 3nm chips is underway

A more energy efficient production leads first of all to battery savings (but not only) for end users. Companies in the sector such as TSMC have already started thinking about production though any problems whatsoever. Samung also began production as revealed by the company itself yesterday through a official announcement. The Korean giant has therefore thrown the gauntlet to the other brand. Who will arrive first?

Samsung has started the production of the chips of various types with 3 nm lithographic process. What does it mean and when will the first devices be released?

According to Samsung, despite a 16% reduction in the area of next-generation chips compared to 5nm solutions, the performance of 3nm chips will increase by 23% and the energy efficiency of the 45%. When creating such microcircuits, the transistor architecture will be used Gate all round (GAA), which received the trade name Multi-Bridge-Channel FET (MBCFET). Combine wider gate channels to allow electricity to pass by lowering voltage levels than FinFET.

Samsung claims that the 3nm process node offers a flexible design which allows him to adjust the channel width according to customers' needs. In addition, the development of the second generation of chips on the same process technician with improved energy consumption (50%), performance (30%) and surface (35%) improved.

Samsung has not yet confirmed who the customers will be for the first batch of 3nm processors. According to rumors, once mass production is established, Qualcomm could order a large batch to make mobile platforms Next generation Snapdragon. We recall in this regard that Samsung announced last month that it plans to spend $ 355 billion over the next five years to develop its semiconductor business.
