Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the answer to Google's Tensor 3. The SoC powered by AI is official

A few hours ago we have announced the Qualcomm processor Snapdragon 8 Gen3 thanks to a big leak. Now Qualcomm has officialized the processor in question which will be mounted on new generation smartphones starting from 2024. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 opens the door to exciting new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities on mobile devices, especially when it comes to image and video processing.

Enhanced performance

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 promises a performance of CPU improved by 30%, with improved power efficiency of 20% and 25% for CPU and GPU respectively. This 4nm chip is structured with two low-power cores, five performance cores and a Cortex-X4 prime core with a frequency of 3.3GHz.

This setup, as Qualcomm claimed, delivers significantly improved performance and greater energy efficiency, which translated into daily use, could mean less time spent charging the phone and more time enjoying the features on offer.

Qualcomm highlights the importance of generative AI with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which supports multi-modal AI models athrough its neural processing unit (NPU) and enhanced AI Engine. During the recent Snapdragon Summit, some of the new features were demonstrated, such as an AI assistant powered by Meta's Llama 2 and a built-in Sensing Hub that securely accesses your device's sensors to provide personalized responses.

Innovations in image and video processing

One of the key features presented is the possibility of photographic expansion, which allows you to extend a photo beyond its original limits by intelligently filling in empty spaces, a concept similar to what you see in Photoshop. Plus, the functionality Vlogger's View allows you to record videos using both the front and rear cameras, superimposing images in creative ways.

Another step forward is represented by the new tool Video Object Eraser di arcsoft which allows you to completely eliminate people from a video, thus extending the potential already seen with Google's Magic Eraser.

Image processing receives a further improvement thanks toQualcomm Enhanced ISP which individually optimizes up to 12 levels of a single photo. In collaboration with Dolby and Samsung, Qualcomm now offers capture/playback of 10-bit HDR photo and the 200-megapixel image sensor for Zoom Anyplace, which allows the object tracking and 4x zoom in 4K.

In addition to AI, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 introduces the new X75 5G modem, support for Wi-Fi 7 and a 64-bit architecture. The upgraded GPU promises to take mobile gaming to a new level, with improved support for Ray Tracing, powered by Unreal Engine, posing a challenge to the iPhone 15's console-level gaming performance.
