Although in just a few weeks it has already gained incredible popularity (also thanks to its predecessors), we must point out that unfortunately this is one of the most easily available hackerable wearable on the market. We're talking about the Xaomi Mi Band 2, which is very affordable, and offers a variety of physical activity monitoring functions with the support of an OLED display.
In fact, according to a recent research conducted on various wearable phones (smartwatch and smartband in essence), it came out that the Xiaomi Mi Band 2, along with the wearable products by Runtastic and Striiv, are the easiest to hack and thus pose the greatest risk to your physical data.
These products can be monitored quite easily, due to inconsistent use or even no authentication or tamper protection. Application code is not sufficiently obfuscated (to protect data), and data traffic can be manipulated and controlled using certificates of origin.
Worse than that, Xiaomi also stores its entire catalog of data collected in a way that is not protected by encryption on the smartphone.
In short, after a lot of praise around the world, a hard and important blow arrives against the new band of the Chinese giant. For the record, the safest smartwatch of all among those analyzed turned out to be the Apple Watch, followed by Pebble Time, Microsoft Band 2 and Basis Peak.
