The photographic sector has become one of the most important features in smartphones in recent years. Whether it's Xiaomi, Samsung or Huawei, the main goal is to bring a device with the best cameras for any usage scenario. This has been achieved by adding more and more cameras in addition to the main one, such as the ultra wide angle one, the telephoto one, depth sensors etc.
Xiaomi: Check new patent with dual mobile camera
Well, apparently Xiaomi would be working to improve image quality in a way never seen before (on a smartphone). As we can see in the patent just leaked online, in fact, Xiaomi has designed a smartphone with two mobile rear cameras that come out and retract according to the uses. But what would be the purpose of this technology? Quite “simply” to create high quality ultra wide angle photos.
Using two cameras instead of one with an ultra wide angle lens should result in low distortion images. Furthermore, ultra wide angle cameras usually use less performing image sensors, which means that under the same external conditions, the result will always be worse than the main camera. That said, it is not specified in the patent if these two cameras will be of a high standard or if they are two mid-range sensors used in pairs to decrease distortions as the sole purpose.
In any case, we remind you that it is still a patent, so there is no certainty that this design will be implemented in the future. In fact, Xiaomi presented the patent almost a year ago, precisely in October 2019, but it has only now been approved.
If we can have our say, the design seems overly complicated if the only purpose is to eliminate lens distortion. If we add to this that to achieve an optimal result you should use two high-end sensors, well then it becomes even more expensive.
