Xiaomi, a research shows the links between COVID-19 and smart home

Since March 2020, everyone's habits have changed, especially those in our homes. With these the physical dispositions of the furniture and our studios have also changed. Think of those who out of necessity had to improvise one workstation for smartworking. The attention of Xiaomi in the last period she has focused a lot on this sector of users, so much so that she has published a research, carried out in collaboration with Wakefield Research, which shows what the changes of these users within smart homes. A very large study that did not only concern smart homes with brand products.

Here are the details of the study carried out by Xiaomi in which we recognize the main changes in the spaces and habits of users within smart homes

La research in question highlighted how from March 2020, the 70% of consumers has made changes in the home environment due to the increase in time spent at home. Also, during the pandemic more than half of the respondents (51%) reported having purchased at least one smart device. This period meant that the notion of private space overlapped that of working space. This mixture necessarily led to a reconfiguration of the physical space to meet the new functional requirements (home + work).

The survey found that for 3 out of 5 respondents it has become more difficult to carve out a personal space to relax at home. This is because work and leisure environments have become one. Of these respondents *, the 63% bought smart home devices, the82% adapted a room for working from home during the pandemic and the 79% has reconfigured at least one room.

Daniel Desjarlais, Xiaomi Global Product Marketing Manager said:

"Intelligent life has always been about re-imagining and optimizing physical space to solve problems such as adapting to new realities through the use of technology. We have seen this adoption accelerate in 2020.

Connected homes, automated systems and new technologies are helping people create ecosystems within their homes to cope with new challenges, whether it's adapting or finding new uses for old spaces, such as offices or classrooms, or simply creating a leaner home that's easier to manage and control"

What are Xiaomi's research results?

The research carried out by the brand has mainly shown three points:

  • people had to adapt old spaces to new uses and this particularly concerned younger users. Two-thirds of respondents said they had to find an impromptu alternative to home stays. This aspect was particularly noted among the Millennial;
  • shopping for the smart home was one of the most chosen options and on average every consumer, since March, has bought two smart products for the smart home (not necessarily Xiaomi). Those belonging to the so-called Generation Z bought more products on average. Smart devices can help rationalize a space and provide solutions to the problems created by spending more time at home. Regardless of the devices purchased, the82% of respondents recognized that there is a substantial benefit to living in a smart home;
  • for many users improvised solutions will become permanent and in fact 60% of the users interviewed stated that they would continue to use their home as a workstation, if this was possible after the vaccine. In particular, 39% of respondents said they want to update their smart devices e 41% will adapt a room to intelligent and interconnected use.

There is no doubt that the smart devices can stimulate users, especially in these periods, to develop an ecosystem at home. This improves productivity when working in the home but above all it helps to automate daily activities. But what do you tell us? Have you purchased or used a smart product during this period?

*The Xiaomi survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 1.000 nationally representative US adults over the age of 18, between 11-16 December 2020, using an email invitation and survey online
