ZTE Axon 20 5G: How the camera works under the display and first photographic sample

A couple of days ago we learned that ZTE will launch the Axon 20 5G on September 1st, becoming the first commercially available smartphone with the front camera under the display. But how does this camera work? Well, the company just released an explanation on their official Weibo account (the Chinese Twitter). Let's go and find out together!

According to what ZTE shares, the company has implemented a special film with anti-reflective coating that maximizes the transparency of the screen without spoiling the image quality.

The Axon 20 5G screen is then made up of seven layers: the protective glass, a polarizer, a touch panel, an encapsulation glass, the OLED panel and other elements necessary to obtain a fluid display like in an ordinary smartphone.

All the layers just mentioned were also coated with new highly conductive, transmissive and transparent material, suppressing any optical diffraction that would change the colors or depth of the image.

ZTE confirmed that the biggest hurdle was finding a screen material that would allow light and detail to pass through. Whether it works well or not we will find out on Tuesday at the official presentation. That said, we still don't know if the smartphone will become available globally, so it may remain a Chinese exclusive.

In any case, apparently the ZTE product manager couldn't wait any longer, so here is the first photo sample from the front camera.
