75% of smartphones sold by Xiaomi are not Xiaomi-branded

We often and gladly tell you about the sales records of the Xiaomi brand, which at particular times of the year has also come to be the number one brand in the smartphone category, but if we enter into the analysis of the models shipped all over the world we are surprised, because good part of the smartphones sold by Lei Jun's company do not belong to the Xiaomi brand.

It is a report by the Counterpoint Research company to reveal this and to give a number, 75% of the mobile devices sold by the Chinese manufacturer are Redmi branded and POCO. Let's take a small step back by telling you a bit of history that in 2019 saw the birth of Redmi as an independent brand, a story that was repeated in 2020 with POCO. Although they still share the manufacturing and supply chain with Xiaomi, POCO and Redmi have refined their strategies in the market, reaching the aforementioned successes.

Xiaomi
  • Redmi imposes itself on the market by launching mid-range and entry-level phones at affordable prices. In principle, their terminals offer excellent specifications for the reference price range and among the most popular models in this area we undoubtedly find the Note series, which has recently reached its eleventh chapter.
  • For his part, too POCO offers phones with great specs at a mid-range price, but with top-of-the-line performance, such as the POCO F3. But its catalog adapts to every need thanks to the "C", "M" and "X" families

Xiaomi from this split of the brands has taken the opportunity to refine its skills and focus on the high-end market, with prices therefore often exceeding € 600 and this has not contributed to the company, which has always been loved precisely for the bands cheaper, now monopolized by Redmi and POCO.

From the image above it appears clear how Redmi and POCO have also come to represent 82% of the overall sales of the entire Xiaomi family, for a period ranging from June to August 2021. It is precisely the affordability of the devices offered by these two brands that partly crippled the sales of Xiaomi terminals, with a much greater demand from users, especially if we add the fact that Xiaomi often brings out top of the range not yet ready, to mature, in the software field.

Now you may be wondering which pro Xiaomi has made certain sales choices. Well, in any case, the Chinese company benefits from it, because the growth of POCO and Redmi have ensured that as a global company, market positioning became widespread in every price segment.

POCO M4 PRO 5G

In fact, although Redmi and POCO are companies that manage themselves and are not related to the image of Xiaomi, they depend on this company in some key aspects, such as software, or MIUI.

Without a doubt, Xiaomi got it with POCO and Redmi the same thing that Huawei achieved with Honor at the time when the American ban was not yet there. A strategy that is partly taking BBK Electronics (owner of OPPO, OnePlus, Vivo and Realme) to heart, precisely with the recent acquisition of OnePlus under the wing of OPPO.

What do you think of it? Which brand do you prefer but above all do you think that Xiaomi should go back to the dawn or continue on the path of the high end of the market? In my opinion it is clear that Apple's dominance, thanks also to the many commercial agreements with the various mobile phone providers, will be difficult to beat, at least until the excellent performances (often superior to those of the iPhone) go hand in hand. with photographic and video performances, the only element in which Apple seems to be unbeatable at the moment.

In my opinion, who have known Xiaomi from the very beginning, that is, since the devices were purchased only online and with Chinese roms we had to put our hand to, the brand should adopt the strategy of re-merging its entire ecosystem and producing an entrylevel, a midrange, and a top of the range per year, well-finished in every aspect, especially on the software side, so that the user / customer knows how to address himself without too many hitches due to often very similar names with equally equivalent technical characteristics. All these devices baked in poco time one after the other, in my opinion they only create a lot of confusion, Xiaomi shouldn't do more... Read the rest »
