Amazon under fire: Nokia innovations have sparked a legal storm

Nokia recently undertaken a legal battle against Amazon, accusing the e-commerce giant of having used some of his inventions without permission patented products linked to the multimedia world. This legal dispute has considerable resonance, as it highlights the protection of intellectual property and the importance of technological innovations in the multimedia sector.

Amazon Prime Video would also be successful thanks to Nokia

The dispute originates fromunauthorized use of Nokia's patented video technologies in its streaming services and devices. Nokia has formalized the issue through lawsuits filed in several jurisdictions, including the United States, Germany, India, the United Kingdom and the European Unified Patent Court.

In particular, infringements on patent rights were detected regarding video compression technologies, content delivery, content recommendation and hardware aspects across Amazon Prime Video services and the company's streaming devices.

Since 1990, Nokia has stood out for its commitment to the development of video technologies. Its researchers have contributed significantly to the evolution of video codecs, from the H.264/Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard in the 2000s to the H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard completed in 2020.

These codecs allowed reduce the necessary bitrate by 50% compared to their predecessors, without compromising image quality, making it possible to share large data files over the internet, high definition video streaming and video conferencing.

Nokia, with its accusation against Amazon, not only aims to protect its own inventions, but also seeks a fair compensation for the use of its key technologies, compensation that will be reinvested in the development of new generation multimedia technologies. The goal is to create a virtuous circle that fuels further innovation in the sector. Although the legal route is not Nokia's first choice (even if it seems the opposite), sometimes represents the only solution to respond to those who choose not to respect the rules followed and respected by other players in the sector.
