This watch uses ChatGPT …but for writing poetry

A few days ago we got to talk about rizzGPT, the glasses created by student programmers "powered" in a certain sense by artificial intelligence. AI is fun and potentially unlimited: you can do anything with the right skills. For example create a clock with ChatGPT who instead of marking the time writes poems in rhyme. That's where she is successful Matt Webb.

Here's what you can do with the OpenAI generative model: build a clock, connect ChatGPT to it and… write rhyming poems!

Il designer Matt Webb has created a very unique smart watch: this device uses an old Inky wHAT screen together with ChatGPT and OpenAI APIs to generate rhyming poems describing the current time. Webb explained that the watch was powered by a Raspberry Pi and that it used language models from OpenAI to instruct the AI to respond with rhyming text for each hour request. The device was designed to be used as part of a physical configuration of the environment: in fact, the request to ChatGPT explained the exact position of the clock in the room, which allows the clock to "talk" in a natural and coherent way with the own environment. For example, it might say "In cozy shelves, I do reside, / It's nearly noon, the clock confides” instead of providing a simple description of the time.

Webb experimented with OpenAI's language models, and found that ChatGPT was the most convenient option for this specific project, although he pointed out that would prefer to use GPT-3 for more complex jobs. One of the benefits of Webb's ChatGPT clock is that each poem is generated in the moment and not pre-programmed. This means that the clock generates text in a completely autonomous and original way, making this product very interesting and one of a kind.

Webb has extensive experience creating innovative and fun gadgets. As for his watch, Webb said that the interest aroused by fans of the project has been so great that he is exploring two possibilities: the first consists in provide a DIY kit to build your own clock, while the second would be that of commercialize the product ready for use.

The daily cost of this solution, however, can be quite high, considering that the OpenAI API costs $1.80 per day to generate poems. Webb further noted that ChatGPT occasionally tends to lie about the time to make ends meet, a small inconvenience for the moment, but one that is being worked on to fix.
