According to reports from Bloomberg, the Chinese search giant Baidu intends to introduce an artificial intelligence service similar to Chat GPT that provides users with conversation results.
The service will be based on the Hernia system, a large-scale machine learning model trained over several years that “excels in natural language understanding and generation,” Baidu said in 2021.
Will ChatGPT have a big rival soon?
Open AI GPT Chat has taken the tech world by storm lately, thanks to its ability to answer fact-based questions, write in a human-like way, and even create code. Microsoft invested $1 billion in Open AI in 2019 and reportedly plans to incorporate some aspects of ChatGPT into its Bing search engine.
Google, meanwhile, likely sees the technology as a threat to its search business and plans to accelerate the development of its own conversational AI technology. Chief Executive Sundar Pichai has reportedly declared a "code red" for ChatGPT and may be preparing to showcase 20 or more AI products and a chatbot for its search engine at the I/O conference in May.
Baidu has reportedly encountered a lag in search growth and sees ChatGPT-like apps as a potential way to outpace rivals. “I am very happy that the technology we are reflecting on every day can attract the attention of so many people. It's not easyhe said at a conference in December, according to a transcript viewed by Bloomberg.
ChatGPT has largely attracted the positive attention, but the negatives have also emerged. Tech news site CNET was forced to fix articles written by AI due to errors and concerns of plagiarism. And New York public schools recently banned ChatGPT out of fear of cheating, as it can create articles and essays that are hard to distinguish from student-created content.
