China restricts supply of drones and equipment to other countries

In a world increasingly dependent on technology, China has decided to curb exports of some drones and related equipment. this move, announced on July 31, was motivated by the will of “safeguard national security and interests”, in a context of growing tension with the United States over access to technology. China's Commerce Ministry said the equipment restrictions would go into effect on Sept. 1.

Starting September 1, the restrictions will also affect equipment such as certain drone engines, lasers, communications equipment and anti-drone systems. But not only that, some drones for civilian use will also be affected by these restrictions. In particular, it will no longer be possible to export civilian drones for military purposes, as stated by a spokesman for the ministry of commerce.

"China's modest expansion in drone control on this occasion is an important measure for demonstrate our position as a great, responsible nation, to implement global security initiatives and maintain world peace“said a spokesperson who preferred to remain anonymous. China, which boasts a large drone manufacturing industry and exports to several markets, including the United States, has notified the restrictions to affected countries and regions. In the United States, more than 50% of the drones sold are manufactured by DJI, a company based in China, and are the most popular among public safety agencies.

DJI has stated that always strictly comply with laws and regulations of the countries or regions in which it operates, including China's export control requirements. “We have never designed and manufactured equipment for military use, nor have we ever marketed or sold our products for use in military conflicts or wars in any country“added the drone maker.

These new drone export restrictions come after China announced export controls on some metals widely used in chip manufacturing last month, following moves by the United States to limit China's access to key technologies, such as chip-making equipment.
