Google: end of support for Chromecast 1st gen. What does it mean for users?

Google recently announced the end of support for the Chromecast first generation, a move that has aroused curiosity and concern among users. This means those who own the company's portable streaming device they will no longer receive software updates or security.

What does end of support mean

The first generation Chromecast, launched in 2013, revolutionized the way we watch television, turning any TV into a smart TV. However, according to the website 9to5Google, the latest firmware version for the 2013 Chromecast is the 1.36.159268, released in November 2022 with “bug fixes and improvements”. This was the first update for the device in over three years.

On the official support page for Chromecast firmware versions and release notes (last updated April 27, 2023), Google says: “Support for Chromecast (1st generation) has ended, which means these devices no longer receive software or security updates and Google no longer provides technical support for them. Users may notice a drop in performance. "

It is worth noting that nearly 10 years of support isn't that bad in the grand scheme of consumer electronics, even more for a low-cost accessory like the Chromecast. However, with the end of support, users may start to notice a performance degradation of their device.

The Chromecast had a second generation model two years after the first was launched, and the third generation arrived in 2018. This should be the latest fixture streaming powered by Google's Cast technology, with all subsequent models transitioning to Google TV.
