Google will update Wear OS as often as it will update Android for smartphones

Good news for all those who love wearable devices and who cannot give up the unique features offered by Wear OS, which is the operating system that contrasts with Apple's Watch OS. With the arrival of the Pixel Watch, Google has renewed interest in its wearable operating system and with it will strive to provide updates for Wear OS in a similar way to how it does with Android.

This is stated by Björn Kilburn, DPM of Wear OS, in an interview with Wired stating that Google's goal is to “release a new version of Wear OS at least every year in a similar way to mobile devices”.

Kilburn explains that the motivation behind Google's philosophical change is related to support for mobile devices. “If the new features added in Android are critical to smartwatches, then we need to find a way to bring them into the smartwatch.

Of course, it doesn't all depend on Google and therefore the various OEMs need to adapt to the upcoming update policy. The fact is that Wear OS will finally have some developments as happens for Apple Watch while for Google Fit it could instead come to an end, in fact on the new Wear OS 3 the app is not preloaded but available for download from the Play Store.

Finally, Kilburn has confirmed that users of wearables with Snapdragon Wear 4100 and 4100 Plus will still receive the Wear OS 3 update later this year. However, a device reset would be required.

If you are interested in buying smartwatches with Wear OS, here are some of the best choices around.
