MediaTek, which led the smartphone SoC market in the third quarter of last year, ahead of Qualcomm, holds the lead for the fourth consecutive quarter. The analysts of Counterpoint Research report that the Taiwanese chip maker has continued to lead the mobile SoC market with one share of 38% in the second quarter of 2021.
Experts point out that the mobile platform Dimensity 700 dominated the segment of 5G devices, while SoCs Helio P35 e Helio G80 have been the most popular for 4G smartphones. The second quarter of this year was one of the most successful for MediaTek.
Qualcomm, for its part, came second with 32% of the market. The company increased its stake from the first quarter of this year, in part due to the decline in shares in HiSilicon, Samsung and Apple. Among the top three there is also Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, which occupies 15% of the market: this is 2% more than a year earlier, but 2% less than in the first quarter of 2021.
The location of Samsung has been steadily worsening for the sixth consecutive quarter: while at the end of the first quarter of 2020 the company's share was 14%, in the second quarter it fell to 7%. Samsung has started investing heavily in manufacturing and has set itself the goal of becoming the largest chip maker on the market by 2030.
We end with Unisoc which holds 5% of the market, as in the previous year. HISILICON at the end of the second quarter of 2021, it only gained 3%, while a year earlier its share was five times higher.
