MediaTek has just announced a new 5G-enabled chipset, the Dimensity 720, which lowers the mid-range price even further than the 800 series. The Dimensity 720 is also the first chipset in the Dimensity 700 series.
MediaTek Dimensity 720 is official: mid-range SoC with 5G
The new CPU is based on a 7nm production process and employs an octa-core CPU consisting of 2 Cortex-A76 cores and 6 Cortex-A55 cores coupled with a Mali-G57 MC3 GPU. The chipset can then be operated with LPDRR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 memory.
As for 5G functionality, the mid-range chip supports the sub 6GHz standard. To cope with the relatively higher power consumption of 5G, MediaTek relies on the so-called 5G UltraSave technology to save some battery.
Other noteworthy features include support for displays with 90Hz refresh rate, HDR10 + support, Bluetooth 5.1, advanced APU for machine learning, 64MP cameras or 20MP + 16MP dual camera configurations. Of course, it is also possible to record videos in 4K resolution.
MediaTek says that the first Dimensity 720 smartphone will arrive in the coming months and given the price of smartphones with Dimensity 820 at the moment it is around € 220, we suspect that the 720 will bring a price below € 200.
Finally, we add that we already know of a possible device with this SoC, or the OPPO A72 5G which was previously caught on the GeekBench benchmarking platform.
