MediaTek distorted benchmarks: Redmi Note 8 Pro is not the king of mid-ranges

A few days ago we told you about the Antutu mid-range ranking, where the Redmi Note 8 Pro stood out in the first position, a device that at the launch made itself heard for the adoption of a MediaTek CPU, which actually proved to be performing and reliable. Unfortunately, however, MediaTek has returned to the forefront of the bad reputation that has accompanied the brand in technological history for a long time, as it has been discovered that a series of falsifications have been made relating to the scores obtained in the benchmark phase.

To make the discovery is the AnandTech portal, known to most because of the various comparisons it offers about technological products. From what emerges from the discovery, MediaTek has distorted the tests relating to the performance of its processors, thus going to "dirty" the real benchmark data of many devices. Among the affected platforms we find AnTuTu, Geekbench and PCMark, while among the affected brands we find OPPO, Living, Realme, Sony and above all our beloved Xiaomi or better Redmi with its Note 8 Pro, terminals that have obtained a maximum performance score higher than what they would have totaled without alteration.

MediaTek falsifies benchmarks: Redmi Note 8 Pro is not the king of mid-ranges

AnandTech has compiled a list of the devices and benchmark platforms affected by the falsification implemented by MediaTek. Unfortunately, this move by the Chinese OEM only contributes to fueling the doubt as to whether it is worth buying a device equipped with its processors. As for us, we confirm that Redmi Note 8 Pro is an excellent terminal and that in terms of performance it does not have much to envy to many other rivals of the same price range. To each MediaTek issued the following statement:

MediaTek

MediaTek follows industry standards and is confident that benchmarking tests accurately represent the capabilities of our chipsets. We work closely with global device manufacturers when it comes to testing and benchmarking devices based on our chipsets, but in the end brands have the flexibility to configure their devices as they see fit. Many companies design devices capable of operating at the highest possible levels of performance when performing benchmarking tests in order to show all the features of the chipset. This reveals what the upper limit of performance capabilities is on a given chipset.

Obviously, in the real world scenarios there are a multitude of factors that will determine the performance of the chipsets. MediaTek chipsets are designed to optimize power and performance to deliver the best possible user experience, maximizing battery life. If someone runs a computationally intensive program like a demanding game, the chipset will intelligently adapt to processing models to deliver sustained performance. This means that a user will see different levels of performance from different apps as the chipset dynamically manages CPU, GPU and memory resources based on the power and performance required for a great user experience. In addition, some brands have different types of modes activated in different regions, so the performance of the device may vary according to the needs of the regional market.

We believe that showing the full capabilities of a chipset in benchmarking tests is in line with other companies' practices and provides consumers with an accurate picture of the device's performance. "

To make a long story short, MediaTek blamed the manufacturing companies. We therefore await the response from the brands involved.

As shown by the graphs, the anonymous benchmark sees a drop in scores, even by -75%. At this point Anandtech made the 9 test, testing a Chinese unit of OPPO Reno 3 Pro, then with Snapdragon 765G. The result? In both cases the scores remained unchanged, thus making it clear that the fault is not attributable to OPPO or Qualcomm, but to MediaTek.
