MIUI reports Facebook and Snapchat as malicious apps: what to do?

La MIUI from Xiaomi is widely appreciated for its advanced features and security measures. However, in recent times, MIUI users have received security warnings which concern very popular applications such as Facebook Lite e Snapchat. This has generated some confusion and concern among users. Previously, in China, the customized Android skin of smartphones Xiaomi has blocked Telegram labeling it as a malicious app.

MIUI security warnings

Google offers a service called Play Protect that scans apps in the Play Store to ensure they are safe. However, Xiaomi has decided to go further implementing your own unique security tool within the MIUI interface. This in-house “antivirus” has recently started reporting commonly used applications like Facebook Lite and Snapchat as potential security threats. The company's recommendation is to immediately uninstall these applications to avoid risks related to alleged malware.

The credibility of the warnings

The security alerts sent by Xiaomi indicate that “different people" have reported the presence of malware in these applications. This raises some important questions about the credibility of reporting. Is it possible that a group of people could coordinate a campaign to falsely report an application as dangerous? And does Xiaomi carry out a manual analysis of reports before sending these alerts?

These are questions that need clear answers to ensure user trust in the MIUI security system. In fact, such a task should be entrusted to a group of people responsible for this service and not to the users. But unfortunately this is a much larger problem than we think. Even reviews on Amazon, for example, can be made to discredit a product.

A problem for developers

In the past, Xiaomi has removed two popular applications developed by its fans, raising concerns about whether the company could use its own security tool to discriminate against developers. This could have a significant impact on Xiaomi's app ecosystem and could discourage developers from creating new applications for the MIUI platform.

This question was raised by Xiaomiui, the team behind numerous leaks and previews that usually studies Xiaomi's source code. In fact, in addition to seeing Facebook Lite and Snapchat reported, too two applications created by the team in question were reported as potentially malicious: MIUI Downloader e MIUI Downloader Pro. The developers, in any case, reassure that there is no malware behind the apps and therefore they are safe.

What to do if you have security warnings on MIUI?

If you are a user of a Xiaomi smartphone and have received this type of warning, the first thing to do is not to come in in panic. It is essential to stay informed and wait for an official comment from Xiaomi. Uninstalling an application may not be the best solution, especially if the application is essential for your daily activities.

In any case, it is always better to trust Google Play Protect and not the customized systems of individual companies. The reason? It is thanks to Play Protect that apps are safe and accessible on the Play Store.
