According to the analytics company Counterpoint Research, the popularity of image sensors from 50 megapixel in smartphones is growing rapidly. The Huawei P40 premium series was the first to use 50 megapixel image sensors starting in March 2020. Other OEMs, including live, Oppo e Xiaomi, quickly followed Huawei's lead. By the second half of 2021, when the sensor Samsung S5KJN1 with 0.64 μm pixels entered mass production, 50-megapixel sensors became the most common. Poco surprisingly it continues to be so.

The share of smartphones with a 50 megapixel main camera increased from 1.7% in the second quarter of 2021 to 5.6% in the fourth quarter of 2021. Now, in the first quarter of 2022, the share reaches almost 10%.

Now, due to price cuts, 50 megapixel sensors with large pixels (1.0 µm or more) are said to be making their way into mid- and high-end smartphones. In February 2020, Sony released the IMX700 sensor which Huawei is already using, after that Samsung e OmniVision they also released similar 50-megapixel sensors.

Consequently, such sensors are located in a growing number of mid-range models. According to data referring to the fourth quarter of 2021, 50 megapixel sensors are found in 11.7% of devices in the $ 400- $ 599 segment.
