3 reasons why Nothing Phone (2) is no better than Phone (1)

In the world of technology, evolution is constant. New devices are launched on the market with the promise of better performance and advanced features. However, "new" is not always synonymous with "better". This is the case when comparing the Nothing Phone (2) to its predecessor, the Phone (1). Despite expectations, the device just presented it does not represent a step forward from the previous model. But why?

USB Gen 2 and data transfer speed

The Nothing Phone (2) uses the USB Gen 2 technology for data transfer. At first glance, this choice might seem like a step backwards from user expectations. In fact, USB Gen 2 offers a lower data transfer rate compared to more recent versions. This means that uploading and downloading files may take longer than other devices with more advanced USB technologies.

The IMX 890 sensor by Nothing Phone (2)

Another element that raises doubts about the Nothing Phone (2) is the use of the sensor IMX 890. This sensor is used exclusively by BBK brands, while other smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, POCO, Google, Asus, Samsung have never used it in their devices. This may suggest that the IMX 890 sensor falls short of the expectations of more demanding users in terms of image quality.

The Snapdragon processor

The Nothing Phone (2) uses an underpowered variant of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, with a clock speed of 3.0Ghz. This is only 0.08Ghz faster than the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. Also, comparing both processors on Geekbench tests, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 used in the Poco F5 scores equal to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 used in the Phone (2). In practice, both chips are virtually identical in terms of performance, making the Phone (2) no better than its predecessor.

In conclusion, despite expectations, the smartphone it does not represent a step forward compared to the first model. The decision to use less advanced USB technology, the use of an uncommon image sensor and the adoption of an underpowered processor all question the performance of the Nothing Phone (2).
