The American chip maker Qualcomm has just announced some news on the Snapdragon Satellite Communications during the MWC2023. Qualcomm first announced the Snapdragon Satellite in January this year.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Satellite: Satellite connectivity coming to Xiaomi, OPPO and Honor devices

At MWC 2023, Qualcomm announced its collaboration with several Android OEMs, with the aim of integrating the Snapdragon Satellite on future smartphones from brands such as Motorola, Nothing, Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO and Honor.

By incorporating Snapdragon Satellite into next-generation devices, our partners will be able to provide satellite information transmission capabilities through a mature and commercialized global constellation in low-Earth orbit that can enable users around the world to communicate outdoors with emergency service providers, as well as family and friends.

According to previous statements from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon Satellite is the world's first satellite solution to provide two-way messaging for high-end smartphones. The Snapdragon Satellite uses mobile messaging services around the world to provide global connectivity. This technology will be the first to be applied to terminals equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 flagship mobile platform, but the company has also said that the technology will be extended to other more advanced chips and second-generation car chips.

Powered by a Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF system and a fully operational Iridium satellite constellation, the Snapdragon Satellite will enable OEMs and other service providers to provide true global coverage. The smartphone solution uses Iridium Communications' weather-resistant L-band spectrum for uplink and downlink connectivity.

As for the release times for Android devices, Qualcomm hasn't disclosed yet, but earlier this year it did say that some Android phones will have these features by the second half of 2023.
