Sony: Ray tracing on PS5 is set to improve enormously

Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a new patent which may indicate a performance improvement for PlayStation 5 games that use ray tracing technology. This patent was filed this week in the name of Mark Cerny, famous engineer of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Describes a system and a method for speed up ray tracing with asynchronous operation and transformation of light rays.

The patent also speaks of a system that uses texture processors for shorten the rays of light, which would lead to an overall performance improvement when ray tracing is enabled. The process is described as a significant speed improvement of technology.

Let's briefly recall what this technology consists of. He allows one realistic reproduction of lights and reflections, similar to what is seen in films that use computer graphics. Cutting-edge technology is considered to be one of the great highlights of the new generation of gaming. On PC, NVIDIA RTX graphics cards have hardware that accelerates ray tracing in many current titles.

Currently, PlayStation 5 games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales e Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart offer graphics options with the technology, but once activated it reduces the frame rate. Another game is Gran Turismo 7. It will come out next week and does not allow the use of ray tracing during races, but only in replay videos and in Garage mode, where the player can check the details of the cars.
