Smartphones have now become compact and powerful devices, capable of offering performances worthy of the older brothers which inspire them based on the area of use, such as PCs, cameras and professional camcorders. In fact, if once we watched amateur videos characterized by "pixelated" visual images, now we are able to shoot 8K cinema videos, such as with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
It is obvious that this quality weighs both in terms of the final price of the product and in actual size of the generated file, representing a problem for the internal memories of the terminals, sometimes subdued compared to this factor. Do you think that a minute of video in high resolution occupies no less than 600 MB of data, thanks to the use of the H.265 / HEVC codec, which should reduce the space occupied by video data, but by virtue of the high resolutions to which they are now pushing smartphones the task is very difficult.
Released the new H.266 / VVC video codec: more resolute videos and greater efficiency
A solution seems to come from the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, which this week announced the release of the new H.266 / Versatile Video Coding (VVC) codec, which focuses on maintaining high quality while significantly reducing file size. The promise is to significantly reduce the space occupied by files: to take the example of 600 MB, these will be reduced to 300 MB.
To benefit from the new H.266 codec will mainly be Apple devices, as basic users are forced to use the H.265 codec to record videos in 4K at 60fps, with no choice.
However, the expansion of the new H.266 codec will take considerable time considering that since 2013, the release date of the previous H.265, the latter is still under-used.
