Samsung ISOCELL HPX: here is the third 200 MP sensor for smartphones

While Sony pixilates and lowers the resolution of its IMX sensors, Samsung is doing the opposite: in the new sensor ISOCELL HPX 200 MP, the company made the matrix pixel even smaller and the resolution higher. Samsung says that this will improve the quality of the photo and provide several arguments in favor of their approach. But let's go and see all of them features together.

Samsung ISOCELL HPX is the third photo sensor for smartphones that the Korean company has presented. Let's see all the details together

The Samsung ISOCELL HPX is the company's third 200 MP sensor with a pixel size of 0.56 µm, the 15% smaller than the sensor ISOCELL HP1. The main advantage of this solution for Samsung is the reduction in the thickness of the camera by 20%, which will allow the module to be placed in thin smartphones. Among the other advantages of the new sensor is the greater image detail: with the 4x digital zoom, thanks to the automatic binning, the image will be as sharp as a normal 12 megapixel photograph.

The 200 MP sensor will shoot in three different resolutions

In the most difficult lighting conditions, 6 pixels will be combined into one of 2,24 microns, which will give an image with one 12,5 megapixel resolution. Under average lighting conditions, the pixel size will be 1,12 μm and the image resolution will be 50 megapixel. When there is enough light, the pixels will not be merged and the image will be taken at full resolution of 200 MP.

Samsung also announces the new technology of QPD fast focus and a new method for creating HDR photos and videos: it consists of combining three frames with low, medium and high exposure. The result is a photograph with one 14-bit color depth. The previous 3 megapixel ISOCELL HP200 module could only produce 12-bit images.

It is not yet known when and in which smartphone the new sensor will debut but certainly next year.
