This is the list of Xiaomi smartphones that could support Android 14 Ultra HDR

According to a recent report, devices capable of taking 10-bit HDR photos can use Ultra HDR on Android 14. On the other hand, Qualcomm is collaborating with Google to make Ultra HDR work on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor-based devices.

Therefore, it is expected to work on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor based devices like the Xiaomi 13 series and later the company may improve the compatibility to support Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and 8 Gen 1 processors.

What are the benefits of Ultra HDR?

THEUltra HDR is a technology that adds a “gain map” to traditional JPEG files to enhance the image and transform it into a high dynamic range (HDR) photo. Google has taken an approach based on an Adobe patent that allows these maps to be created and stored within a standard JPEG file. A significant advantage of this methodology is that existing software can display Ultra HDR JPEG files as usual, just ignoring the gain map.

This means you don't need to create separate versions of your standard and Ultra HDR format images. Using the Ultra HDR format, all devices will be able to display images in the best available quality. However, some image editing software and social media platforms may remove gain maps when saving edits, thus losing the HDR component of the image. This is a challenge that software developers will face to drive the widespread adoption of Ultra HDR.
