Snapdragon 860 is actually a 'recycled' processor from 2019

Snapdragon 860 is an unreleased Qualcomm SoC, or so at least we believed until yesterday. The first smartphone to integrate this processor will be POCO X3 Pro which will be presented very shortly in the Global version. There is a lot of hype for the device, especially in India, since it is a top of the range (there, not here). But it really is a flagship smartphone? If we only consider the processor, can we say that it is a new device? No, and we explain why.

Snapdragon 860 is actually a Qualcomm 855 Plus and this is confirmed by the data sheet on the official Qualcomm website. Why?

The question is truly incredible and we find it hard to understand it. But let's order so that we understand what is happening. TO July 2019 Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 855 Plus, which is an upgrade of the standard 855 that had to be mounted on gaming smartphones. Although not for gaming, two of the devices that equip it are Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro e OnePlus 7T Pro. So far no problem except that yesterday we saw that also POCO X3 Pro will integrate it.

Many of you will say, but POCO X3 Pro will have one Snapdragon 860 and not an 855 Plus. Well, actually these two devices are the same. The proof is the datasheet on the Qualcomm official website.

Snapdragon 860

As we can see, the two processors just described are merged into a single voice. This means that in reality, although the specifications of the Snapdragon 860 have not yet been revealed, it is the same processor. But why did this happen? The answer at the moment is impossible to know, however we have an idea.

According to our point of view (which may not correspond to reality) POCO needed to get a lot of publicity for his new smartphone e he asked Qualcomm to "lend" him a new, unpublished processor. Clearly the US microchip giant has not built an ad hoc SOC but has thought of rename an old SoC from 2019 making it pass for new, in 2021.
