UWB: Google will launch the new API for all apps

In May of last year we saw that Google Pixel 6 it would come with support for UWB technology. Likewise, Oppo would have presented a cover that incorporated the same technology. Well, apparently the Mountain View giant wants to go further and extend the "service" to all OEMs who will produce smartphones with such support. Until now this was only possible at system applications, but the situation will change this year. We learn it from XDA Developers.

Google has decided to extend UWB coverage and for this, it seems, will expand the service by launching the public API. Everyone will be able to use it

In November, Google added a new API for ultrawide waves (UWB) on Android. In this way, apps can use this technology allowing you to turn smartphones into smart keys for cars, homes and more. However, this API was limited to system applications only. Now the colossus is preparing one new API open to all.

The new API has been reported to Mishaal Rahman, which analyzed the latest Android AOSP code and found evidence indicating its existence. In his opinion, the new API is public, that is, it can be used by more applications in addition to those native to the Android system, allowing them to take advantage of the UWB bands in different ways.

However, it is worth mentioning that few smartphone models have a UWB chip. The first were theiPhone 11 and Samsung Galaxy Note 20, which can already be used as digital keys for some BMW cars. However, the possibilities can go further, by controlling other devices such as appliances, TVs and much more.

Unfortunately there is no time frame yet for the release of the new UWB API, but should be made available via system update for all compatible smartphones.
