Xiaomi and Huawei, peace made for patents: there is an agreement

Huawei and Xiaomi said they had found a common solution, concluding a global agreement for the mutual sharing of patents, which includes several innovations in the field of communication, including 5G.

This agreement puts a stop to long legal disputes regarding intellectual property between the two companies. As reported by Reuters, the agreement addresses multiple issues and marks the conclusion of the litigation initiated by Huawei against Xiaomi, previously accused of having infringed some patents relating to wireless communications, mobile photography and screen unlocking technologies.

Xiaomi and Huawei agree on patents: there is satisfaction on both sides

Commenting on the achievement of the agreement between the two giants is Alan Fan, head of Huawei's intellectual property department: "This agreement once again reflects the industry's recognition of Huawei's contribution to communications standards and will help us enhance our investments in research into future mobile communications technologies."

Words that Ran Xu, general director of business development and IP strategy of Xiaomi, also agrees with: "This demonstrates that both parties recognize and respect each other's intellectual property. As part of our commitment to our values on IP, Xiaomi, as always, will respect IP, seek long-term and sustainable IP partnerships for shared success, drive technology inclusion with IP, and enable more people to benefit of technology".

Huawei's list of agreements continues

For Huawei, this recent intellectual property agreement is nothing new. So far, the company has signed approx 200 bilateral patent agreements with several leading companies, such as OPPO, Samsung and Ericsson.

Over 350 companies have benefited from patent licenses from Huawei. However, the standout element remains 5G, a crucial technology for Huawei in these times, influencing not only the mobile sector, but also connectivity more broadly, from the home to vehicles.

Thanks to the revenues generated by these patents, Huawei has maintained its ability to focus heavily on research and development, which is essential to maintaining its leading position in the market. Over the last decade, the company has channeled a whopping $140,5 billion into innovation. In the year 2022 alone, Huawei dedicated $23,2 billion to research, accounting for 25,1% of its total revenue.
