They seem not to want to end the hassle for Xiaomi that a few days ago was sued by the company InterDigital in India. Today, however, it is the HEVC Advance in Germany that will bring Xiaomi before the Düsseldorf court for patent infringement.
Xiaomi sued by HEVC for patent infringement
HEVC Advanced announced earlier this week that patent owners in the HEVC Advance HEVC / H.265 Patent Pool have filed patent infringement lawsuits in the Düsseldorf regional court against Xiaomi and Vestel Germany. The latter is a well-known manufacturer of consumer electronics for the European market. The official charge is that of violating the HEVC / H.265 digital video encoding standard.
HEVC Advance is an independent licensing administration company formed to lead the development, administration and management of patent pools for the licensing of essential patents of leading video codec technologies. Furthermore, Advance provides a transparent and efficient licensing mechanism for both patent owners and patent implementers.
In any case, according to what is written on the site Cision which first broke the news, Vestel sells televisions and set-top boxes in Germany that use HEVC / H.265 technology, while Xiaomi offers smartphone products with the same standards. Of course, this is not allowed unless you first purchase an official license for the video codec technology that HEVC holds the license for.
Now, we don't know how Xiaomi will behave in this situation. In a similar and very recent case involving a German company called "MAS Elektronik", the latter decided to become the patent licensee and therefore all legal disputes relating to patent infringement proceedings brought by the three owners were resolved.
So in simple terms, you could solve everything very simply and quickly, by purchasing all the necessary licenses from HEVC Advanced.
