That's why the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra screen is the "best in the world"

We will never stop talking about Xiaomi mi 10 ultra, the latest creation of the brand. As we will have understood by now, the company has focused a lot on this device and it has taken years and years of research and development. An average user can see all the brand engagement simply by using a device and the first thing that catches the eye is the display quality. Well, Xiaomi has decided to explain why the device in question is among the best around, if not the best. We remind you that at the moment the most awarded screens are those of OnePlus 8 Pro need Oppo Find X2 Pro.

An exhaustive explanation from the brand: Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra has a screen among the best ever, also thanks to the 10-bit depth

As we said the screen is the first thing a user notices when using a smartphone. In the case of Xiaomi mi 10 ultra a OLED from 6.67 " with a whole host of noteworthy features. Among them stand out the high refresh rate at 120HZ, the frequency of 240HZ tactile sampling and a peak of brightness which reaches 1120 nits. But the feature that makes this display "unique" is the 10-bit color depth, able to present up to 1.07 billion colors compared to the classic 16 million of an 8-bit screen.

Now, we know that the image on the screen of a device is made up of many pixels that together form an image. Color depth has always been a key indicator of screen quality since the greater the depth, the greater the number of colors that can be displayed. In short, if a pixel can display two colors (black and white) it will have a depth of 1 bit, if it can display four colors (always starting from white and black) then it will have a depth of 2 bits; if 8 are displayed in the same scale, it will have a depth of 3 bits. Doing so leads to 10 bit, reaching a scale of transition of 1024 colors. Below is an infographic that gives a better understanding of how pixels work.

What is the real advantage of a 10-bit screen? There is not just one, but we can summarize them in three points:

  • richer colors,
  • more homogeneous and delicate image;
  • smoother color transition;

Currently most smartphones have screens with 8-bit depth: doing their math maximum color display capability is 64 times lower to that of a 10-bit depth screen. But now comes the beauty: most of the devices on the market use the technology of pixel dithering (FRC or Frame Rate Control) which allows you to change colors on the 8-bit screen for simulate the 10-bit display effect. This effect is called “8-shake-10” e it is absolutely not a native 10 bit. Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is equipped with a native 10-bit screen instead and it does not use the compensation argument we have just described. The difference between the two screens, 8-bit that simulate the native 10 and 1 bit, is almost imperceptible to the human eye but in reality it is not non-existent.

While in the first case (10 bit) there is a clear transition between colors, in the second case there is one multi-state color display and therefore slower. The reported effect is similar to that of 10 bit but it is only a simulation. Quite frankly, the difference is not seen and if the cost is less then so be it. But it is okay to be aware of the technology of a device since it is from what the right price to pay is calculated.

Ultimately the Mi 10 Ultra is the best as it is the only smartphone to mount a NATIVE 10-bit display.

The evaluation of "best display in the world" has not been made by specialized bodies, or at least not yet.

But are you serious? It's 10-bit so is it the best? Have you seen the displays mounted on the top of the Samsung range? And I say this as a user who does not appreciate the brand but let's face it, the phrase "ultimately, it's 10-bit so it's the best" makes a laugh on a technology site. As if having 10 bits and a greater color range compensates for the type of technology used, as if an OLED outperforms a Dynamic AMOLED or a Fluid AMOLED in the daily yield. It would be like saying: "this Fiat is better than a sports car because it is painted better"... Read the rest »
