Xiaomi Mi 5X and Xiaomi Mi 6: same cameras but different results. What changes?

When it was announced, Xiaomi Mi 5X has hit two aspects in particular: a top-of-the-range processor (the Snapdragon 625) and a dual rear camera identical to that of the 2017 flagship, Xiaomi Mi 6. But then Xiaomi Mi 5X can you really boast a photographic quality equal to that of the company's top range of excellence? It is a question that many users have come to whom, with this brief comparison, we will try to respond.

Put a Top Gaming Camera on Xiaomi What was 5X a sensible choice?

Before starting the comparison I will briefly brief you Datasheet of the two Xiaomi smartphones, so you can appreciate the difference between the specifications on paper:

Xiaomi Mi 6

  • SoC Qualcomm SD 835
  • Adreno GPU 540
  • Double 12 Mpx rear camera (sensor size: 1 / 2.9 ″ - pixel size: 1.25 µm at 27mm and 1.0 µm at 52mm) and aperture: f / 1.8 at 27mm; f / 2.6 at 52mm with 4-axis OIS
  • Wide-angle sensor: Sony IMX386
  • Telephoto sensor: S5K3M3

Xiaomi Mi 5X

  • SoC Qualcomm SD 625
  • Adreno GPU 506
  • Dual 12 Mpx rear cameras (sensor size: 1 / 2.8 ″ - pixel size: 1.25 µm at 26mm and 1.0 µm at 50mm) and aperture: f / 2.2 at 26mm; f / 2.6 at 50mm
  • Wide Angle Sensor: OV12A10
  • Telephoto sensor: OV13880

Already on the paper you can notice two substantial differences. The Xiaomi Mi 6 has 4 optical axis stabilizer at 52 mm focal length and with wide angle focal length (27mm) has a diaphragm aperture significantly greater than My 5X.

What does this mean? Photographic enthusiasts will know it already, but let's know it even for the less experienced ones. Having a more open diaphragm allows you to capture more light, at the same exposure time. On the contrary, instead, a more open aperture, at the same focal length, requires less exposure time to capture the same amount of light. Ergo, the photos of Xiaomi Mi 5X are likely to be more moves than those made with Xiaomi Mi 6.

Another difference, in my opinion, is crucial to the sensors. In fact, although the resolution is identical between the two smartphones, the sensors are clearly different, and especially those on board Xiaomi Mi 6 are characterized as tops in the mobile photo compartment.

Here are some photographic samples:

left: Mi 5X - right Mi 6

After all these examples, we come to what the conclusions are, but first here is the link to find all the images in full resolution.

Despite the differences in sensors, the photographic results are very similar, although the shots made with Xiaomi Mi 6 they are often sharper, especially when zooming. For his part, however, Xiaomi Mi 5X it is able to get brighter images at the same conditions.

In terms of saturation, the Xiaomi Mi 6 actually seems to have the best: the shots seem to capture better the actual colors of the scenes unlike Mi 5X, which tends to saturate images too much.

Chapter portraits: The Mi 6 manages to focus on the subject even when it is moving, while the Xiaomi Mi 5X tends to capture a kind of whitish wake in motion. It looks like the Mi 5X sensor tends to favor the beauty effect.

In conditions of poor light, however, the great opening of Xiaomi Mi 6 has the best, allowing you to get sharper photos even though with Xiaomi Mi 5X you can get more brightness. Here it is hard to choose a winner.

Overall, however, we can definitely assert that the expense is worth the candle: Xiaomi Mi 6 he definitely emerges as a winner ... as it is also right to be. But Xiaomi Mi 5X is a smartphone to keep in mind if you are looking for a great value for money, especially in the photographic sector. Let's not forget that there are around the two models 150 euro difference.
