We talked to him for a long time and for several weeks, analyzing every rumor and indiscretion being published on the net, but finally we have official information on the Xiaomi Mi Drone in his hands. It was officially presented (as predicted) and, if it had already seemed outstanding with the leaked information, there is still something more to us now.
Unfortunately, Xiaomi has not yet provided a complete list of Mi Done's specifications but only a series of images and a demo video.
Starting with the certainties we have at the moment, we find that the entire drone was built by the Flymi company, keeping in mind the modularity. Both the spherical photographic compartment and the 4 rotors are detachable and therefore replaceable. For example, we think of a future upgrade that does not force us to buy a new jet drone.
The camera compartment features a Sony 12-pixel-capable sensor and can record videos in 4K in RAW format or 1080p at 60 fps and, thanks to the spherical mount on which it is mounted, is able to rotate to 360 °. Also, thanks to Ambarella's image processor (ISP), the ultimate quality of the video is extraordinary.
As far as autonomy is concerned, we can tell you that the built-in 5100 mAh battery has a more respectable capacity and certainly superior to most of the competition. Xiaomi declares up to 27 minutes of continuous flight (we do not know if video recording is also considered).
Thanks to the presence of a GPS sensor, it is not only possible to monitor the flight of the Mi Drone on the map but it is also possible to breathe a sigh of relief in case it flew so far from our controller that it loses the signal, as it is equipped of a very clever feature that allows it to fly back (following the same path) until it reconnects to the controller.
About the controller, it uses two PCB n antennas that can guarantee a maximum coverage of 3 KM (in an open and obstacle-free environment). A compatible smartphone must be connected to it through which to view where the drone is flying.
With regard to the price, Xiaomi decided to market two different versions:
- Xiaomi Mi Drone Full HD to 2499 yuan (about 342 Euro)
- Xiaomi Mi Drone 4K to 2999 yuan (about 410 euro)
The goal of making even such a complex product cost-effective was so successful at Xiaomi.
