I touch screen they have become the norm for interacting with our devices, but physically touching the screen is not always the most comfortable thing, especially if your hands are dirty. The Google Pixel 4 gave us a glimpse of how hands-free phone control might work with Motion Sense, and now it seems that Xiaomi is about to bring it back, with plans for a similar feature on what appears to be a tablet on the way.
Xiaomi is taking hands-free interaction to a new level by introducing gesture control to an upcoming tablet
Xiaomi appears to be working on a device featuring a ToF camera that will support the hands-free air gesture control, according to the evidence shared usual and very well prepared Kacper Skrzypek. Users will be able to control media playback, adjust volume, skip songs, turn pages, and even answer or end phone calls, all without touching the screen. While the Pixel 4 used Google's Soli radar, the system here would be optical. To get started, the user simply places their hand at one distance of 15-40cm from the screen. After holding it there for a moment, they can interact with the space in front of the phone using MIUI gestures. Violinist he speculates that we're probably talking about a tablet, but other companies are exploring these kinds of features in modern smartphones, like on the Honor Magic 5 Pro.
There's still a lot we need to find out about this system, but its success will really depend on two questions: how well Xiaomi's implementation works, and whether users will actually prefer all of this to touchscreen interaction. Motion Sense control felt like a gimmick on the Pixel 4, and we're still not convinced Xiaomi can do any better; for now, we'll just have to wait and see how it develops.
