According to the latest from China, the "polygraphic method, device, mobile terminal and storage medium" patent applied for by Xiaomi Mobile Software Co. was recently authorized.
Xiaomi patents a technology to detect lies
The abstract shows us that the patent refers to a method, device, mobile terminal or storage medium for detecting lies. The method is applied to a mobile terminal, and the mobile terminal includes only one camera. In particular, it is a pan-tilt camera with telephoto lens.
The method of operation includes: adjusting the shooting angle of the pan-tilt telephoto camera to aim at the face of the test subject; acquisition of the facial image of the test subject through the telephoto pan-tilt camera and determination of the trajectory of the movement of the pupil; when the trajectory of pupil movement satisfies a predetermined condition, it is determined whether the subject under observation is lying or not.
It is found in the patent that the pan-tilt telephoto camera is set on the mobile terminal to collect the pupil movement trace of the test subject and judge whether the test subject is lying according to the pupil movement trace. By making this simple and effective lie detection function can be implemented on the mobile terminal. Furthermore, the patent should "improve the user's interest in using the mobile terminal, thus improving the user experience".
According to Chinese media, if the patent is transferred to Xiaomi mobile phones in the future, it could greatly reduce the rate of lies being told in daily communications, especially when dealing with boyfriends or people you don't trust.
I personally don't think it's a method you can rely on. If only because if it were truly reliable, I'm pretty sure many countries' intelligence services would already be using something similar, but that's not the case as far as I know.
