The IDC (International Data Corporation) has just published the report on the wearable market globally in the year 2019. The report shows that in 2019, Apple ranked first in the world market for wearable devices, followed by Xiaomi, which becomes the second largest brand in the world and the largest brand in China. Samsung, Huawei and Fitbit are in third, fourth and fifth places respectively.
Xiaomi dominates in the wearable sector in China and in the world
Thanks to the acquisition of brands such as Beats and the continuous updating of products such as the Apple Watch and AirPod product line, Apple has become the largest wearable brand in the world by number of shipments in 2019.
Turning to Xiaomi instead, the company continues to grow strongly in the wrist wearable sector. In 2019, shipments of Xiaomi wearable devices were 41,7 million, with a market share of 12,4%, an increase on an annual basis of 78,8%.
In terms of growth rates in the smart wearable market, IDC data show that the two main segments, those of smart bands and smartwatches, grew by 37,4% and 22,7% respectively. While the fastest growth is represented by audio products (TWS headphones), which have a growth rate of up to 250,5%, with total shipments that for the first time have exceeded those of all the other wearables.
In the field of TWS wireless Bluetooth headphones, Xiaomi is also one of the first brands in China. The Redmi AirDots wireless Bluetooth headphones launched last year, with a price-performance ratio high at 99,9 yuan (€ 13) and are known as the first super-cheap headphones to have started the trend of TWS headphones in China.
At present, the most complete brand in the Chinese wearable market is precisely Xiaomi, which has product lines such as Xiaomi Mi Band, Xiaomi Mi Watch, Mi Bunny Watch (for children), Mi AirDots True Wireless Headset. Obtaining remarkable results as with the launch of the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 which saw a global sales volume of over 1 million units in just 8 days. While the Xiaomi Mi Watch has allowed the brand to invoice over 100 million Yuan, or almost 13 million euros, becoming in fact the most popular Wear OS smartwatch ever in China.
Finally, according to the latest group data Xiaomi, as of September 2019, the number of connected IoT devices (excluding smartphones and laptops) on the Xiaomi IoT platform has reached about 210 million units, with an increase on an annual basis of 62%. The number of users with five or more devices connected to the Xiaomi IoT platform has increased to about 3,5 million, with an increase on an annual basis of 78,7%.
