Xiaomi and Leica, two giants in the field of smartphones and cameras, have announced the birth of a new institute dedicated to the research and development of optical technology for mobile imaging. The Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute, based in Beijing, has the ambition to create an innovative industry standard for the optical performance of mobile devices by combining both companies' expertise in digital imaging, artificial intelligence and optical design.

The institute, which matters over 200 experts including the legendary optical designer Peter Karbe, focuses on four main technical factors: the designing ultra-precision optical lenses in compact form, achieving ideal performance in computational photography, adhering to the highest optical standards for lenses, and researching and applying cutting-edge optoelectronic technologies. The goal is to develop an advanced optical system in the era of mobile photography, capable of offering an unprecedented photographic experience to users.

The first fruit of this collaboration will be Xiaomi 14Ultra, Xiaomi's new flagship in the field of mobile imaging, which will be launched by the end of the month. This smartphone promises to provide exceptional optical performance, both in low light conditions and in zoom mode. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra will also be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processora battery from 5000 mAh with fast and wireless charging, one 6,8-inch AMOLED screen with 120 Hz refresh rate and 256 GB internal memory.
