Smartphone screens are able to determine the purity of water

The world of gods of smartphones are evolving at impressive speeds so that the first has been created glass for mobile devices capable of self-healing. But technology, as we know, continues to move forward and levels are reached that we never would have imagined a few years ago. An example is the discovery ofUniversity of Cambridge, according to which the glass from a smartphone can be used to determine how many toxins are in the water. A useful tool or not?

Did you know that thanks to the capacitive displays of our smartphones it is possible to determine the toxins and the purity of the water? That's how!

A team of researchers fromUniversity of Cambridge discovered an unexpected property in capacitive touchscreens used in smartphones and many other modern devices. It turned out that they can be used for detect toxins in water and other liquids. In short: a capacitive touchscreen captures changes in the electrostatic field when an electrical conductor, such as a finger, touches its surface.

British scientists have decided to test whether it is possible to detect and measure ions in liquids in a similar way. To do this, they applied drops of different liquids on a touchscreen, similar to that used in smartphones and tablets.

Furthermore, for each liquid a unique result is obtained for its concentration and the charge of its ions. According to the researchers, the accuracy of this method is comparable to using specialized laboratory equipment. A sort of high-tech experiment that does not require, after all, excessively expensive machinery. Basic chemical reactions, to simplify as much as possible.

According to scientists, in the future, people will simply place a drop of water on the screen of your smartphone to discover the presence of dangerous impurities inside. That's true you need to select a small part of the display, which will be configured specifically for this purpose. As usual, the timing of the appearance of this technology in commercial devices has not yet been decided and indeed, probably never will be.

The study was presented a few months ago.
