Google Pixel 8 Pro: the review of the camera that impressed DXOMARK

Google Pixel 8 Pro

The Pixel 8 Pro stood out above all for its quality of images taken in strong light conditions (≥1000 lux), getting the best score (160) among all tested devices. Colors are pleasing and accurate, both in photos and videos, and skin tones are natural and true. Autofocus is fast and accurate, and subject exposure is generally correct. The level of detail is good in all zoom settings and in macro images.

The Google Pixel 8 Pro also has a balanced and consistent zoom performance, thanks to significant hardware and software improvements on the ultra-wide-angle module. The device has reached the highest score (119) in the wide category, thanks to a 48MP sensor with an f/1.95 lens which guarantees good texture and noise rendering even in low light conditions. Furthermore, the Pixel captures excellent macro images, thanks to the automatic switching to ultra-wide angle at very close distances, like most devices in the Ultra Premium segment. The qualitative leap compared to the Pixel 7 Pro (12MP 1/2.86″) was more evident at the ultra-wide angle. Near-to-medium telephoto zoom was also good, with a 48MP sensor with an f/2.8 lens.

Photos and zoom were evaluated in SDR mode, because Dxomark felt it was the best mode currently available for photography. The analysis and evaluation of this device is based on photos and SDR renderings. Since viewing HDR content depends on many factors, such as the viewer screen and the application used, the photos shown in this review are shown in SDR, meaning they do not have the HDR gain map applied. Viewers with HDR screens will be able to see SDR versions of photos.

Among the weaknesses of the Pixel 8 Pro I'm there occasional loss of fine details and local loss of texture, segmentation errors in bokeh mode, temporal noise visible in low light during videos, differences in sharpness between frames in videos and stabilization that is not always effective.

In conclusion, the Google Pixel 8 Pro is an excellent choice for those looking for a versatile and high-performance camera, capable of capturing high-quality images in different situations and light conditions.
