Android Auto apps are performed on our smartphone and streamed to the car screen. For this reason, when we use Google Maps in Android Auto, the app cannot be opened on the device. With user surprise, the company is gradually activating the possibility of open Maps on your smartphone even if it is used in Android Auto. When we connect our device to the car with Android Auto, it "lives a double life". On the one hand it continues to function normally, but on the other hand it has to manage the Android Auto interface and the applications running in the car. These applications run on the smartphone, so it is normal when we open them in Android Auto we can't do it on the other device.
While understandable from a technical point of view, this limitation can be frustrating because Google Maps on mobile has more features than Android Auto, it's easier to type and even if we have the car stopped and parked, we have to close Maps on Android Auto or disconnect your mobile phone in order to use the application.

Luckily, Google surprised us by allowing us to open Google Maps at the same time on both devices. The novelty does not seem to be extended to all users and does not seem to depend exactly on having a specific version of Auto or Maps: it is activated on the server side. Google has not announced this news, so it could be a bug. We'll have to wait a few weeks to see if the feature will end up be implemented in bulk or not.
Until then, if we don't already have it active, the only way to open Google Maps on the mobile while using Android Auto is to make sure that does not appear as a primary or secondary app.
