Mastercard presents Touch Card: contactless payments even for the blind

Mastercard extends its commitment to inclusivity by introducing a new standard of accessible cards for the blind and visually impaired, called Touch Cards. There are few effective ways for the blind to quickly determine if they have a credit, debit, or prepaid card, particularly when multiple cards feature flat designs with no name and embossed numbers. Mastercard is addressing this challenge with simple but effective innovation. Let's go and see thereidea of Touch Card and how it works.

Mastercard is for inclusivity and expands the possibility of contactless payment even for blind and visually impaired people with Touch Card. Here's what it is and how it works

Raja Rajamannar, chief marketing and communication officer said:

The Touch Card will provide a greater sense of security, inclusiveness and independence to the 2.2 billion people around the world with visual impairments. For the blind, identifying their payment cards is a real struggle. This tactile solution allows consumers to orient the card correctly and know which payment card they are using

Con la nuova Touch Cards, Mastercard has improved the current standard by introducing a system of "notches" on the side of the paper to help consumers use the right paper, the right way. But how are the Mastercard Touch Cards thought?

  • the new Touch Card credit cards have the notch round
  • debit cards have ample notch square
  • prepaid cards have one notch triangular

Clearly, the new standard for the blind and visually impaired was designed for work with POS and ATM terminals. The future plan is to ensure that the service can be extended on a larger scale.

Where was the idea of Mastercard to create the Touch Card born? The project was assessed and approved by Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in the UK and from VISIONS / Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired in the United States. From the point of view technical instead, the Mastercard Touch Card card was co-designed by IDEMY, world leader in Augmented Identity.

The launch of the Touch Card once again confirms Mastercard's commitment to supporting inclusiveness; this project in fact follows the introduction of TrueName, the payment card designed to meet the needs of the community transgender and non-binary.
